On 01/02/1999, Cr Skehan announced his retirement from Council and elective public life to take effect at the end of this Council term, 20 March 1999. Cr. Skehan said, "I have worked hard for various committees. I have lived in the area for 45 years, the last 37 years in Laverton. During this time, I have seen huge changes to community life in the area, and I am proud to say I have, with the help and encouragement of others, been a part of that change.

People should recognise that during this time, my wife has given me great support, without which I could not have achieved very much. The burden on her has been very heavy, and I hope people will recognise her contribution. I have, therefore, decided that the time has come community development to the next generation. I can then spend the time with my wife and grandchildren that I could not spend with my own children.

We are now on the eve of the new millennium, so what better time to leave things to the new generation? I only hope that everyone recognises their responsibility to elect men and women of integrity, people our children and grandchildren can look up to and recognise as esteemed leaders of the community.

I will maintain my interests in a few community organisations, but they will be organisations with a low political profile. I would like to thank all those who have supported me in the past. There are many ups and downs in public life. We can all cope with the successes, but it is the loyal support of your friends who make those "downs" something that can be put behind you so you can get on with the job. Many thanks to all.

I have attached a list of organisations and jobs I have been involved with over the last 45 years.
